North Dakota....check.

Drove to North Dakota, vicinity of Lidgerwood today.

But first a shot of the Onalaska mascot: The Sunfish

Ended up at the city park RV campsite (electric and water for $15) in town as the Wildlife Management Areas I checked out proved to not allow camping.

Of course, soon after I went riding after dinner, I found an unlisted-by-allstays.com WMA called Wild Rice.  Dang it.  Oh well.  I let allstays know, perhaps they'll list it for future use by others.  I also told allstays about the ones that now prohibit camping.

I found a small military vehicle exhibit near some grain silos:

 Cobra Gunship

North Dakota, so far, is pretty flat.  Basically farmland with the majority of crops being corn apparently.

Although I can now add North Dakota to the list of states I've ridden, I can't say that I've missed much by only getting to this state now, in my 12th year of riding motorcycles!

Feeling a bit let down.  I'm almost certain I'll down I-29 towards Sioux Falls, IA tomorrow, leaving the rest of North Dakota for some other occasion.

Even the sunset was meh.

If someone out there reads the above and wishes to educate me on North Dakota's hidden wonders for motorcycle riders...I'm all ears but you better hurry as I'll probably head south soon after 9am tomorrow!

Well, I did google "what to see in ND"...and the results were rather bleak...Theodore Roosevelt National Park on the far west side...but I'd be hard pressed to say it's any different than what one can find in SD at the Badlands...and that's at least on your way home (give or take a bit). Good news is now your colored map won't look so odd with ND just sitting there, ignored like the forgotten one.

Thanks Martha, looks like the spot we camped at near Walls Drugstore is closed now, apparently some people left gates open and cattle got out. Sigh.

Dom, you’ll remember that my response to your same ND question came up with results matching Martha’s. There are always hidden gems everywhere but in ND it takes an affinity for the prairie....and time.

Hi Dom,

NoDak takes time to come to appreciate. Eastern North Dakota is one of the most important biomes for migrating birds, the prairie potholes. It you look at Google Maps, you'll see a band of tiny water bodies strung out across the state. Fall is a magical time there. (It helps that I've been duck hunting there with my FIL for years)

And the sunsets are world class!

I’d say that you didn’t give it a chance. But then again, no mountains and it looks like there may be a lot of smoke from the fires.

Yep, I remember, and you definitely need to like the prairie’s nature. Time is one thing I didn’t really have or want to give to ND.

Thanks Jason, the WMAs I did check were all by small bodies of water...thanks for the feedback and comments.

Yep, not much time given. The smoke from the fires didn’t help as they’ve masked the sunrises and sunsets the last week or so.

added some pics from Lidgerwood itself and one from Onalaska, WI

The good thing though, Dom, your mentioning of North Dakota had me look it up. Geologically the area is actually quite interesting (if you are into this stuff, that is...)

Not much into geology SonjaM.... :)
