It was, and continues to be, surreal in my mind. I wish I could articulate something positive that grew from that day but as you say it just seems blood and treasure was spent for no positive return.
Granted, what do I really know about the results of all those wars and battles beyond what I read or see on television. A distortion of the truth and reality no doubt. The politics of it at the time seemed simple and direct but I can't help but think of what American journalist H. L. Mencken had this to say about quick fixes: “Every complex problem has a solution which is simple, direct, plausible — and wrong.”
All the wind from politicians of all stripes that I hear who live by the soundbite just can't seem to wrap their heads around complex problems.
Oh well, going for a ride will clear my brain of all that crap.
