Not much was done in terms of tourist activity, basically hung out at the campsite, worked on the VRRV and simply relaxed between chores. Near Sunset, found a path to the lake that let us get some swimming in without having to walk over to the "beach" area and mix with other people. It was very nice.
Monday, June 14
We displaced and headed to the town of Independence, KS to get supplies at the grocery store there and then headed a few miles out of town to the Little House on the Prairie Museum site. There were several information plaques outlining the buildings and history behind the series of books written by Laura Ingalls, but basically the cabin is a replica based on Laura Ingall's descriptions in her books.
The nearby barn had a few burros and a couple of small horses, here's one of each:

Our next campsite, located at the COE (Corps of Engineers) Birch Cove Recreation Area on the edge of Birch Lake. It's a really nicely situated site, we've our own private access to the lake, with trees for shade during part of the day and so far, no camper in the site next to us!
Our neighbors really consisted of a Great Blue Heron who was walking along the shoreline. It flew away when the girls two sites down walked towards it from their campsite. I managed to get a couple of decent shots of it:

The afternoon was whiled away taking dips in the lake to beat the heat, even though we did have electrical power for the air conditioner. Martha took the Sammy into the nearby town of Barnsdall for some pool noodles to use in the lake along with some supplies.

That used to be one of my favorite TV shows. It looks like the CoE campgrounds aren't very busy. I thought that they were usually full...
Great to see you exploring the Great Plains states. Summers are hot and humid, no snow covered peaks to cool one off. Just a dip in the lake.
Love the pace you two are taking. True retirees... well half retired. Matha still working, right?

RichardM, I don't recall ever watching the show myself when I was a kid. So far the COE camps have not been full, but on the weekends there are more people obviously.
It must be love when the wife asks for a detour and the Mr. says sure!
We are indeed having a great “see where the road” takes us adventure….we figured with all the newbies with their campers heading west in a post pandemic world, we would go against the flow and see where the road takes us.
Richard-I am finding fewer sites to chose from the closer we move to more population dense areas…but in general what we’ve seen is about half of all the COE sites appear closed for renovation and that Saturday is the only trouble day.
The TV show was very popular in Germany but I was more into sci-fi so I never watched it.
