It's free though with a 72 hour maximum occupancy period. No pull-throughs so be prepared to do some backing in and out of sites. The western loop is for tent camping and the eastern loop has several back-in or pull-in spots. Not quite level most of the sites, but then again, what do you want for free?
I'd left last night's BLM very early as I woke to 14°F (-10°C) outside temperatures and the inside of the RV not much warmer at 43°F (6°C)! Note to self, don't leave window shades up, heat bleeds out much faster.
A disappointing sunrise and poor prospects for a warming trend led to an early departure; which had me setup and ready to work less than 90 minutes later.
Spent the rest of the morning troubleshooting some reported issues at work, as always, having to defend the network.
During a break in the afternoon, the distant mountain peaks to the northwest of the campground were presenting in shades of blue:
Work done and with temperatures dropping from a high of 63°F (17°C) to the low 40s by 5:00PM, I headed out on Fiona to see what kind of sunrise was visible from Skyline Drive.
The light was bad, very dusky, and the sunset was non-existent really. I may have to return tomorrow during lunch if the weather works out. Still, here's some pics of Fiona on Skyline Drive.
After waiting for a sunset which never occurred, I went into the city to pick up some cooking supplies and ended up riding back to the campground in the dark and cold.
Made it safely back just when I was starting to feel the cold in my fingers; this in spite of the heavy leather gloves I was wearing.
I think I'll stay here an extra day. It's a nice campground do dry camp in for a short time.

The blue mountain photo is pretty nice. You don’t always need a sunset. Getting free camping is always nice. Isn’t there an auto-start for generators when the voltage gets below some threshold? Then you can just run the furnace.
My onboard generator doesn’t have auto start and I don’t use onboard furnace except for short periods until the catalytic propane heater catches up. The 4kw only gets used for microwave and 1500w heater duty as required. The onboard furnace heats fast but goes through propane faster than the catalytic heater.
The Skyline Drive pictures always give me a sense of vertigo. Such a neat road though.
I agree with Richard that the blue mountain photo is really nice.
I expected snow for some reason especially with those chilly temperatures. Does that area usually have snow this time of year?
I don't think I've ever seen snow on Skyline Drive or around the city. Might be too low?
Never mind the sunset, Dom. The pics are awesome anyway. Love the blueish mountain range. And the boon docking spot looks prime.
I like this campground a lot, weather was warm enough that I even went hiking!
