The European Trip, Day 14: Salzburg, Austria

We woke in Italy, would go to sleep in Austria.

Burg Hohenwerfen castle seen shortly after entering Austria from Italy

We are in Salzburg to be exact.  Four hours or so from Mestre, Italy, we arrived in Salzburg in the early afternoon and after a quick lunch of scrumptious goulasch and pasta and wiener schnitzel, we toured the Hohensalzburg Castle which dominates the views of Salzburg.

We took the funicular or festungbahn up to the main part of the castle, a bit pricey but it does include entrance fees to almost all the stuff within the fortress walls.  Not to mention, a strenuous hike to the fortress!

This is the view one sees from the onset of the fortress tour:

The tallest peak pictures is the Hochstaufen

It was a rainy day when we were there so not many outside pictures taken.  Some interesting military exhibits but the muse wasn't in me to record the displayed items.

Sets of armor appear to be advancing on Miles and Martha

In the festungbahn car, waiting to go back down to Salzburg

Patrick and his first of assuredly many pretzels

Where Mozart was baptized.

We went back to the hotel for a bit to relax and for me to do some work.  Saw some interesting clouds racing by the nearby mountains visible from our hotel room:

I hope to get better pictures of the outside of the Hohensalzburg castle tomorrow before our planned tour of the "Eagle's Nest" in nearby Berchtesgaden, Germany.

Sunday Morning update:

We drove over the river and found a good parking spot that allowed us to walk along the river and get these shots of the Hohensalzburg Festung or Fortress:

The domes of Dom Zu Salzburg

and then, the sun came out briefly from out of the clouds

We wandered about some more, working our way back to the hotel, and saw the below view while crossing a bridge.

I got a day behind reading your blog. Did you feel a big cultural change from country to country? There was definitely a weather change. Keep on sending pictures. I think Richard and I should go the fall or spring after I retire. He's in Canada now, and you probably won't hear as much from him in the next week. Are you going to be going to Vienna? That is one stop for me. Enjoy!

Salzburg - another lovely city. Too bad about the rain, but the misty skies make a lovely backdrop for the city and mountains. Hope the weather clears up for you

Bridget, unfortunately Vienna is not in the itinerary....it's more a Castles and mountain top motif for us while in Austria. There's a weather front moving through the area, hoping the skies clear for us while in Berchtesgaden for the tour.

Bluekat, here's hoping about the weather....but then again, as you said, it makes for some good lighting.

Looks like Patrick has gone from fries to pretzels. Sounds good to me.

You guys are really getting around. That fortress is pretty cool.

Loved Salzburg! And I didn't even get to go up to the castle. Beautiful shots.

Trobairitz, Patrick still seeks the french fries when looking at menus...the pretzel is "on the go" food.

agent713, Salzburg is a very nice town with friendly folks.
