Memorial Day 2018

Starting in 2008, I've made it a point to ride to nearby Fort Logan National Cemetery.  Except for 2013 as I was in Alaska, my being there reminds me of those who've given their lives for their country.  After all, that is what Memorial Day is for, right?

And yes, the Colors fly at my house today as well.

First, as usual, I visit with the son of a friend of mine who passed away while on active duty with the Air Force.

His grave stone is front and center, SSGT Brian Joiner, R.I.P. young man.

I then rode over to section 18 and found a good spot to shoot the main flag pole for the cemetery, along with the 50 State Flags brought out for the planned ceremony at 11AM.

It was a very calm day in terms of wind, and so while I waited for a breeze to lift the Stars and Stripes aloft, I spotted this sign of new life among the gravestones:

A strong breeze didn't develop for me as hoped, the below was the best effort I could capture on the part of the wind.

By now, it was close to 9:00 and the expected crowds were building within the cemetery grounds.  I've no patience for crowds, even those composed of members of the deceased buried at Fort Logan; so I made my way out.

I hope you'll take a moment to remember those who died in the service of their country, or whom passed away after honorably serving.

From 2012's ride to Fort Logan:
